The Janet Airline was set up by the DoD to ferry workers to and from several locations in the Nevada Ranges and various plants. Contracted out to the company EG&G, and based at Las Vegas McCarren International Airport, the airline has its own dedicated terminal building and parking area, which is strictly off limits to anyone who does not work at the sites. Heavily armed security are guarding the gates at all times. Hundreds of workers get on these flights each day and the parking lot is always packed with cars.
There are regular flights in Boeing 737's from Las Vegas McCarren Airport to Groom Lake and Tonopah Test Range/Sandia Labs. The workers there are flown in in the morning, and flown back to Las Vegas in the late afternoon. The planes are easy to recognize by the red stripe and the absence of airline markings (see photos below).
In addition to the above locations, Janet airlines also operate routes to Edwards AFB North Base and Palmdale A.F Plant 42. At Plant 42, EG&G have their own small terminal. These routes are done mostly by Beech Super King Airs, light twin engine aircraft. However we have also seen Boeing 737-200's flying out of Plant 42.
History of the Janet Fleet: The first Janets operated by EG&G were two DC-6 aircraft that were acquired in 1972 and 1976. Both were retired in October 1981. The first Boeing 737 was N4515W, acquired in June 1980. Three months later followed N4510W, and another three months later N4508W. Three more 737s joined the fleet in 1983, 1984, and 1986. In the early 1990s most of the older Janet 737's were retired and replaced with newer 737-200's.
Below is a list of all current aircraft of the Janet Fleet, with background information and, in most cases, a photo of the actual aircraft. Click here for more information, photos and a flight schedule. Thanks to our reader Andrew Campbell for providing the history information!
