Area 51 Trip

Hi, I'm italian, I will go with 4 friends in the USA and I want to visit Area 51 gates. I have a question: can I go to the main gate from the mailbox road or have I to across the E.T. Hwy 375 up to backgate road? Is it dangerous? Thank you and excuse me for my dirty english :P
